It is with utmost sadness that Sheriff Dart announces the tragic, line of duty death of Cook
County Sheriff's Police Officer, Jason Gallero. Officer Gallero passed away on Thursday,
September 15th, 2016 after collapsing while participating in a colors run at the Cook County
Sheriff's Police Training Academy, where he served as a highly respected instructor to recruits
of the Cook County Sheriff's office and other law enforcement agencies across Cook County. Officer
Gallero was a 22-year veteran of the Cook County Sheriff's Office, where he began his career in the
Department of Corrections in 1994 before joining the Sheriff's Police Department in 2002.
Jason was a loving father to his daughter and was beloved by countless friends,
family members, and his fellow officers. Officer Gallero was a passionate member of the law
enforcement community and truly enjoyed his time training future Police Officers and Deputy Sheriffs.
His talent and dedication to policing will have a lasting effect on the communities of Cook County
for years to come, and he will be deeply missed.
The Cook County Sheriff's Memorial Foundation, in addition to providing the family financial
assistance, will be setting up a special, tax-exempt fund to benefit Officer Gallero's daughter.
As always, thank you all for your dedication and service, and please join Sheriff Dart and Patricia
in sending our thoughts and prayers to Officer Gallero's family.
